Internet Tutorial [ Learn
about the Internet ]
What is the Internet? (This is the second page of Sympatico's easy tutorial: "Learn about the Sympatico service and the Internet." It takes only about 15 minutes to go through it. When you're finished reading each page click on the yellow arrow at the bottom right of your screen to continue. (You might need to scroll down to see it.) To get to the main Help page, click the "Help Main page link on the left of each Help page, or click the "Help" link at the bottom of most Sympatico.ca pages.) The Internet is a collection of computers throughout the world which are connected mostly using telephone lines for the purpose of sharing information. Historically, the Internet was used mainly by governments and educational institutions. Today, the Internet is used by millions of people including individuals, small and large businesses, associations, schools, universities, and governments. The most popular part of the Internet is the World Wide Web. The Internet is a public network, which means no one actually owns it. Pieces of it are owned by various organizations, but no one entity or central computer controls it. The pieces are linked together in a cooperative way to form the global Internet.
