Changing your Sympatico settings [Your Account]
Basic Info  |  ROAMING  | Dialup Settings  |  E-mail & News Settings Dialup Numbers  |  Sympatico service settings table

Manual setup for roaming

In order to use your Sympatico account while travelling in Canada, you need to change the dialup number your computer uses to connect to the Internet, the e-mail and news settings for sending e-mail and reading newsgroups, and the DNS (Domain Name System) settings, as well as modify your Sympatico login User ID. You can connect wherever a local Sympatico dialup location exists. Use the dialup location closest to where you're travelling. If you cannot find a Sympatico dialup location to which you would dial locally, choose the one for which you'll incur the lowest long-distance charge (usually the closest geographically; if in doubt, ask someone who knows).

In total, you must configure the following settings manually to be able to connect to the Sympatico service in your remote location:

  • Dialup number - the number your modem dials to connect to the Internet if different from your 'home' Sympatico dialup number.
  • Outgoing e-mail server address - the SMTP server; (your incoming mail server - the POP server - remains the same)
  • *Newsgroup server - the NNTP server used to view Usenet newsgroups (*optional - only if you need to read newsgroups while roaming. Changing your news server will affect your newsrc file, which records which messages you've read, etc. We suggest you use a Web-based news reader, like DejaNews)
  • DNS server addresses - ensures efficient Internet browsing.
  • Your Sympatico User ID - append your User ID with the domain name of your 'home' Sympatico service provider.

To make it easy to print the roaming instructions which pertain to your computer's operating system and your Internet software, the specific directions for manual setup for roaming are on separate pages:

Manual setup of dialer settings
(changing User ID, dialup number and DNS settings)

Manual setup of e-mail and news settings
(changing SMTP mail server and NNTP news server settings)

Once you have configured a new dialup connection, you can save it for the next time you return to the same place. In fact, you can make and keep as many dialup connections as you'd like. However, you will still have to change your outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings each time you travel.
